Nursery of endemic plants
SIRAS Pacific, expert in plant production for sustainable rehabilitation
As a pioneer company in New Caledonia within the field of mining sites revegetation, SIRAS Pacific has one of the only nurseries in the Territory to be exclusively dedicated to the production of indigenous and endemic species, whatever the ecosystem considered. It allows the company to meet the needs of its different customers, in terms of erosion control, ecological restoration or landscaping operations.
The facilities
The modern and constantly evolving facilities of SIRAS Pacific ensure an optimal environment for the production and conservation of plants
The main nursery
Originally established in the commune of Mont-Dore, it is now located in the village of La Foa. Its production capacity is currently of 300,000 plants, but since its opening in 2016, it has been constantly evolving (facilities improvements, expansion).
The tunnels that compose our facilities are equipped tunnels with translucent tarpaulins, shading cloths (of variable shading intensity according to the age of the plants), micro-sprinklers triggered by an automatic watering system and ergonomic height cultivation tables. An acclimatization zone, based on an original system of wheeled tables which can be moved along rails, as well as a growth area for large subjects complete these devices.
Threatened species sowing and breeding greenhouses
In addition to the La Foa structures, two complementary tunnels (similarly equipped) are installed where the company’s headquarters are located (commune of Païta). They are designed for the sowing of all the typical species used in revegetation, as well as for breeding trials of rare and endangered species.
The productions
Thanks to its 30 years’ experience in the field, SIRAS Pacific manages the propagation of more than 300 New Caledonia endemic or native plant species, belonging to every ecosystem that make up this territory: the mining maquis, the dry forest, the rainforest, coastal areas. Plants for agroforestry and landscaping are also produced.
Finally, in order to meet our clients needs, in terms of compensatory measures, SIRAS Pacific’s teams have been working for more than 20 years on the propagation of rare and threatened species. To date, for a number of these species, breeding routes have been identified and are mastered. Such is the case in particular for Araucaria rulei. Conservation efforts have indeed been undertaken since 1999 and reintroduction operations in its original habitat are still ongoing.
